First off – I hope that you, your friends & family, and your colleagues are all staying safe and healthy during this COVID-19 pandemic. We’ve been writing a lot over the past week about ways to help you keep your people safe by enabling remote work during these trying times, and if you have any additional questions or need more information on anything we’ve been sharing, please email us at [email protected] and we’ll do whatever we can to help.
One of the biggest questions we’ve been getting since the coronavirus outbreak started is not just how to get people access to the critical applications they need to be productive when working from home – but how to do so really, really quickly. In many cases, IT teams are being informed about remote work policies in real-time, as they are mandated. Which means they don’t have weeks or months to plan and roll out remote work solutions – they need them yesterday.
In fact, last Friday we had a company come to us with exactly this problem. As the COVID-19 situation escalated, the company – a large energy company in the UK – decided to institute a mandatory work from home policy for the entire organization. As a result, they determined that 500 people throughout their organization would no longer have access to their billing and client management software – which is obviously mission-critical for keeping day-to-day business moving forward.
The company approached us on Friday asking if there was any way we could help provide remote app access to this critical software by Monday, which they thought would be a very tall order, based on their experiences with other technologies for enabling remote access to applications.
But because the Cameyo platform was built for the cloud with elasticity and usage control at the core, we were able to help. In fact, we were able to enable remote work for these 500 employees in less than 3 hours.
Utilizing Cameyo’s unique virtual application delivery control plane combined with the power of Google Cloud (note: Cameyo also works in any cloud environment, hybrid, or on-premises) we were able to set up a fully elastic environment for the customer. Why is elasticity so important? With Cameyo, rather than paying for 500 servers to be running constantly – even when not in use – we dynamically spin up and down servers based on the real-time usage. Cameyo is also uniquely capable of supporting dozens of users per instance, which further reduces cost and improves performance.
Whereas old school technologies like virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and Desktop as a Service (DaaS) would have taken months to deploy, Cameyo enabled the energy company’s IT team to provide 500 remote workers with access to critical applications within hours – all while saving 80% compared to the cost of VDI products.
In addition to the time and cost savings, the energy company was also able to provide a much better user experience for their remote workers. Employees simply launch the applications via a URL provided to them by IT, which opens the full desktop version of the software on ANY device, from any HTML5 browser. There’s no learning curve for the employees, and no frustrating lag when accessing the remote app.
Cameyo also gave the IT team peace of mind by giving them the ability to lock down the sensitive information within the application itself. The IT team was able to define rules within Cameyo that prevent users from copy & pasting or downloading any of this critical information to their personal devices. So IT is able to give everyone remote access to the app from any device, while also ensuring that security is completely locked down.
We know many of you are in the same boat, and are searching for ways to give your employees secure remote access to critical applications as soon as humanly possible. But we also know that you need to deliver these capabilities in a fiscally responsible manner, especially considering the economic uncertainties this outbreak has introduced. Here at Cameyo we can help you do both.
You can get started with a free trial of Cameyo (no credit card required) and have your first application published within minutes – it really is that easy. Start your free trial now.
